Atrani: a magical village in miniature.
Atrani (SA), the smallest municipality in Italy by area, is also one of the most charming and visited villages on the Amalfi Coast and, during this Christmas season, among the protagonists of The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy.

Nestled between the sea and the rock, the village attracts a large number of visitors every year. The evocative living nativity scene remains etched in the heart, transforming the stairways and narrow alleys of the village into a timeless tale: costumed performers, soft lighting, and the scents of tradition create an intense and engaging atmosphere, capable of moving both adults and children.

After the event “Arriva la Befana,” the festive spirit continues with new moments of entertainment and tradition. The historic center comes alive with a performance by the Gruppo Folk Atrani, which brings folk music and vibrant colors to the small squares and alleyways, offering residents and visitors an authentic celebration experience.

In Atrani, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, discover its artistic beauty and more: the Collegiata of Santa Maria Maddalena Penitente, with its unmistakable majolica-tiled dome overlooking the sea; the Church of San Salvatore de’ Birecto from the 10th century, an ancient palatine chapel linked to the history of the Amalfi doges; Piazza Umberto I, the heart of the village and a place of meeting and everyday life; the alleys, arches, and stairways that tell centuries of maritime history; and Atrani Beach, one of the most distinctive on the Coast, framed by typical houses and captivating cliffs.

But let yourself be enveloped by the sense of wonder that is also reflected throughout the rest of the year: the Via Crucis with the Battenti on Holy Thursday; the Historical Parade of the Maritime Republics on June 4, every four years; music concerts in July–August; the Feast of Santa Maria Maddalena in July (19–22) and October (20–23); the Blue Fish Festival in August; the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on the last Sunday of August; the Byzantine New Year on September 1; La Notte dei Botti on December 23; and La Discesa della Stella on December 24.

Complete the experience with moments of conviviality by tasting local specialties, from traditional sweets to simple, genuine dishes such as “o’ sarchiapone,” the green zucchini that forms the basis of the signature dish.

The wine to accompany sarchiapone should be a dry, full-bodied red, such as a Furore or a Tramonti, as recommended by The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy Guide.
